EDUCATOR


As a teaching professional and arts educator, I am dedicated to creating an authentic rapport with my students while fostering an environment in which the pursuit of artistic excellence is both rigorous and fun. I am committed to providing individualized mentoring and embrace a ‘process over product’ based pedagogy. As an educational professional, I have found this approach empowers students by helping them develop greater social-emotional growth in and out of the classroom.

I have fifteen years of experience in the classroom from the secondary to collegiate level teaching an array of theatre, film production and media studies classes, and I have worked in boarding schools for the past ten years. While I am proud to say that my student mentees have been accepted at an array of top tier institutions to continue their artistic pursuits, including: Julliard, NYU - Tisch, USC, UCLA, Duke, Cal Arts and Chapman, I feel the impact of arts in our communities extends well beyond those who choose to specialize in it. I strongly believe the value of an arts education serves the greater community needs of a school by providing a forum for community-wide engagement, entertainment and discourse. It empowers students by giving them the tools for self-exploration and expression, while cultivating confidence, self-worth and empathy.

His uncompromising stance prompted the U.S. Government to label him a communist, destroying his reputation and career. In 1952, Lee died at the age of 45. World Monuments Fund – Lalibela Preservation Project In March 2013, a group of high school students and faculty from the Ross School in East Hampton, New York, traveled to Ethiopia. This midwinter term course provided an intensive experience in documentary photography and filmmaking in a distant land and culture. The group visited the site of Lalibela with WMF local representative Mamo Getahun, and produced this video about WMF's efforts to preserve Biet Gabriel Rafael, one of the eleven rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, carved some 800 years ago. The Golden Matrix This pedagogical project explores and documents the preservation and transfer of knowledge, goods and culture from ancient Greece and Rome to Byzantium, through the translation schools of the Middle Ages in Baghdad, Cordoba, Paris and Sicily and culminating in the Florentine Renaissance. A select group of students and faculty traveled to and studied at locations particularly crucial to this transference. Ross On the Road: Kenya This 16-day intensive travel course focused on documentary photography and filmmaking. Students and faculty traveled from Nairobi to Mombasa collaborating with local groups, including: The Boy's Town Orphanage outside of Nairobi, children of a local Maasai tribe on the Massai Mara and the Yatta South Women's Group in the Machakos Region. From their collaborations, students produced a series of multimedia projects. Blog

Ross On the Road: Morocco From Casablanca, Fez and Marrakesh to the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara, 26 students and 4 teachers explored and documented the rich cultural diversity of Morocco on this 15-day media intensive travel course. Throughout the trip, students worked with underprivileged children in a variety of locations including a circus school in Sále run by the AMESIP Foundation. Students created workshops in web, photo and video for the children and co-create a web-based product for sharing their stories as well as documented their experiences through photography, video and journaling. I am a professinally trained stage and screen actor with training that covered Constantin Stansislavski, Uta Hagen and Sandy Meisner. I am an experienced Commedia dell'arte performer. I have studied sword fighting under Tim Weske at Swordplay LA. While capable of playing a wide range or character types, from broad commedy to subtle drama, over the years I was lauded for my work playing darker characters. After much reticence, I learned to embrace this character type after Joyce Carol Oats praised my performance of Arnold Friend in a film adaptation of her 1968 O. Henry Award winning short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? I must admit it is a fun challenge to play characters that are antithetical to myself, and while teaching is my current profession, I welcome any opportunity to pursue acting once again.
